Pétition : Global pétition for citizens in support of Gilles-Eric Séralini
Pétition posted on 03/10/2012
Will be sent to : Premier ministre, Ministres de la recherche, de la santé, de
l'agriculture et de l'environnement.
The published results of Professor Gilles-Eric Séralini's long term toxicological study come to the conclusion that the genetically modified maize tolerant of the herbicide Roundup (NK 603) and the Roundup itself are both toxic.
[ 10 994 participations ]
Faced with the possibility of grave health consequences, the signatory organisations are especially concerned as they note that the main critics of the study come from members of the risk assessment committee whose recommendations led to the approval of the aforesaid maize. Therefore they ask for the provisional suspension of NK603 and Roundup approvals.
Furthermore they call for transparency regarding the health and environment risk assessment studies which gave rise to the approval (cultivation and importation) of GMOs and pesticides. They demand the release of the raw data on a public online website in a statistically usable form, so that the whole of civil society can either perform or sponsor second assessments.
This call for transparency concerns - as a matter of priority - the raw data from studies prompting approvals for :
GM Maize NK603, approved for import and consumption in Europe, and the subject of the aforementioned study ;
Different commercial formulations of Roundup approved for use in Europe, one of which is the subject of the aforementioned study ;
Two GM Bt Maize : the Bt 176, the first approved for cultivation in France and the maize MON810, the only GM maize authorised today for cultivation in Europe ;
Soya tolerant of Roundup : the GTS 40-3-2 ie the one with the oldest approval and the one entering human and animal foodstuffs.
 “Long Term Toxicity of a Roundup Herbicide and a Roundup Tolerant Genetically Modified Maize”, Food and Chemical Toxicology, octobre 2012.
Text of the petition
The publication of the long-term toxicity studies by the team of Professor Gilles-Eric Sé ralini concluded that Roundup tolerant GM maize (NK603) and Roundup itself - the most widely used herbicide in the world - are both TOXIC. Given the gravity of the possible health consequences, the undersigned signatory organizations and citizens :
- Are concerned, especially as they find that the main criticisms of this study are from members of the evaluation committees responsible for the authorization of the corn.
- Request therefore the temporary suspension of authorization of NK603 maize and Roundup.
- Require transparency on the evaluations of health and environmental risks which lead to the authorization (culture or import) of GMOs and pesticides in the European Union.
- Require disclosure of raw data from these studies on a public online website and in a usable form statistically, to enable the whole of civil society to carry out or sponsor second opinions.
